Straight outa Hoboken, (actually Haledon NJ, but they gigged incessantly at the famous Maxwells in Hoboken) the Feelies released this great song as their first single in 1979, and it appeared on their first album ‘Crazy Rhythms’ in 1980. It is a fun, blistering almost nerdy pop-punk confection. The Feelies were a true indie band and inspired many a future act with their music and their independent approach. They fell into the generic punk/new wave category (where else could such a unique oddball group land at the time?), but really they were post-punk, stated pretty clearly in a quote from band member Glen Mercer: “The sound we were after was a reaction against the punk scene. Being a little older, we felt it had all been done before. We wanted the guitars to be cleaner, and we started experimenting with a lot of percussion." Included here is another great alternate version which appeared on the infamous ‘Ork Records: New York, New York’ compilation released in 2015. Essential listening.
